Shopping Strategies

Last week, Groceryships celebrated a big step forward with the soft opening of our new community space. As we begin to set up shop in our new storefront on Hoover st., Groceryships groups are also moving forward by leaps and bounds. After learning how to successfully navigate nutrition labels and package ingredients, last week our groups discussed shopping strategies that can save money-- and time-- at the grocery store.

Did you know that something as simple as creating a shopping list has been proven to save shoppers money? Group leaders also discussed the benefits of menu-planning. By choosing what meals you're going to make ahead of time, you can also figure out ways to repurpose ingredients. For example, one evening's bean burrito dinner can become the next day's bean and quinoa salad.

Although some tips take more time upfront, members attested to the value of pre-planning. One mom said, "I ask my family to help me figure out what we should eat for the week. My husband will ask for his favorite dish, and then my kids will ask for whatever they're craving. Before you know it, I have a week's worth of meals in mind that I know everyone will like. And it does save time to reuse leftovers in tomorrow's lunches and side dishes." 

Another money-saving strategy is to shop for whatever is in season. This produce is not only fresher, but it is also more likely to be grown locally. Without a plane trip from the southern hemisphere factored in, food prices are often much lower. And if strawberries are in season and on sale, we suggest buying in bulk and freezing what you can't use right away. You'll have refreshing, healthy smoothies all year round.

Take our Really Green Chocolate Smoothie, for example. It's packed with greens, from frozen broccoli to fresh kale, blended with unsweetened cocoa powder, and flavor-boosted by adding dates. The result is a chocolate milk shake that kids-- and nutritionists-- will love. 

Green (Really, Really, Green!) Chocolate-Date Smoothie

Serves 4

  • 2 Frozen bananas
  • 1 cup kale
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1 cup frozen Broccoli
  • 5 pitted dates
  • 2 cups unsweetened Almond Milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 cup of ice

Directions

  1. Blend all the ingredients well in the Vitamix.
  2. Serve and enjoy!
