Spring Program Update

April was another month to celebrate at Groceryships Community Center...

Groceryships group members moving and shaking more than ever. Several women are continuing their walking regimen with Denise McCanles, talking a brisk 30 minute walk together every Tuesday morning around the neighborhood. Zumba is ongoing on Thursday mornings, and some of the group leaders now lead meditation, stretching, and basic calisthenics before their classes.

The middle of the month marked the gradation of three Groceryships groups over two days. Groceryships graduates shared powerful stories about reversing their diabetes, and improving their husbands’ and families’ health and eating habits. They also shared their new healthy cooking skills with family members and guests in a potluck after the ceremony.

At the final group graduation, Ana arranged for a motivational speaker, Roberto Recillas to share some words with the graduates. His message was a call to action to our groups’ moms, “take care of yourself first, so that you have energy to give to others. When you take care of yourself, you are providing for your family.”

All six of the new groups (launched in March) continue to grow and make progress. Most groups are receiving the Farm Boxes from Farm Fresh to You, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

On the partnership front, we are moving forward with the new funding opportunity from Wholesome Wave and Eisner, preparing to launch six more groups in the middle of June. We will also be doing a sample class for the leadership at Pacific Clinics, thanks to programing subcommittee member, Dr. Stacey Cohen. And we had a productive meeting with the Executive team at Black Women for Wellness. Their Kitchen Diva group leaders will be joining our next Groceryships Leader training in August, with plans to help us reach more diverse communities in the fall.

Of course, none of this progress could be possible without you, our valued supporters. Whether you've given your time, your resources, your expertise, your connections, or your well-wishes to us in the past year, it's made a huge difference. We hope you are as proud of this shared progress as we are.
